  • a full and thorough skin examination for all skin cancers including melanomas, backed by experience and extensive training/qualifications
  • all skin surgery including most procedures that would normally be referred to a Plastic Surgeon
  • use of non-surgical approaches to cure skin cancers where appropriate
  • He commonly sees patients referred by other GPs for skin checks and complex surgical procedures and is happy for patients to self-refer if they would like another opinion or to discuss surgical options he can offer.
Did you know...
  • A large number of melanomas are not sun related
  • The peak incidence of melanoma in women is around age 40
  • Melanomas can be pink, black, brown, purple, multi-coloured, raised or flat
  • About 12000 melanomas are diagnosed per year in Australia and 1200 people will die from melanoma
  • About 400 000 patients are treated each year in Queensland for other skin cancers
  • Patients are not aware of the majority of melanomas found upon screening i.e. they did not present because of concerns with the lesion
  • Two thirds of Australians will get a skin cancer in their lifetimes. Every Australian is at risk.
The message is simple – book in for a thorough skin check with a highly qualified doctor. It could save your life.

Practice summary/Billing information

In an attempt to provide the best service to my patients and fully inform you, the following summary is provided.

Skin check appointments
• I will advise when performing your skin check when you next skin check is due. Reminders are sent prior to the time of the next suggested appointment. If you wish to have your next skin check on time, I suggest that you either make your next skin check appointment at the time of leaving your previous skin check appointment or call/book online several months prior to your due date. I regret that due to overwhelming demand I may not be able to accommodate requests to ‘fit you in’.

• If in between your routine skin checks a new spot of concern arises please call reception and ask them to book an ‘interval’ appointment which should be able to occur within a few weeks on most occasions. Also, if a spot we freeze does not resolve or you have concerns arising from a procedure I have performed then also please request an interval appointment. These appointments may have an out-of-pocket fee of up to $20.

Procedures
• It has become unviable to bulk bill most procedures. Due to this, most procedures will now attract out-of-pocket fees. Generally, these fees will be in the vicinity of $40-50 out of pocket for simple excisions/biopsies and $150 out of pocket for more complex procedures such as skin grafts. This will also be the case if multiple cancers are detected. Unfortunately, Medicare requires you to pay the full fee for the procedure so it may require you to pay for example $200-$500 and get all but $50 put back into your bank account. You will be advised of any out-of-pocket fees by myself or the receptionist prior to, or at the time of booking your procedure. If you are not able to proceed due to these fees, please discuss with me. Alternatives include:
- Referral to the public hospital system; be aware that wait times are excessive and completely out of my control
- Referral to a private plastic surgeon
- I am happy to provide the pathology results of biopsies and you may find an alternate practitioner of your choice

• If I need to discuss results of a procedure with you this may require a consultation. These consultations may or may not attract out of pocket fees. You will be advised at time of booking.

• I will generally not charge any out-of-pocket fees to follow up from procedures I perform. Occasionally I may not be available and several doctors at the practice will provide follow up such as removal of sutures and wound dressing on my behalf at no out-of-pocket cost to you. Some doctors at the practice have indicated they will charge out of pocket fees for routine and non-routine aftercare and the receptionist should advise you that this is the case at time of booking. Please check with the receptionist who you are being booked in with and any fees that may arise. Any fees that other doctors feel necessary should be discussed with them directly.
